Semi-Apocalyptic Trade News

I wasn’t really paying attention to the Santana hoopla, assuming the Yankees would get him and generally not giving a shit about the American League, but apparently the Yankees Jr. have struck a “tentative deal.”

So they’re spending wildly to get one of the best pitchers in baseball and we’re bringing home old guys who we’re nostalgic about. Neat.

I don’t even have the energy for a Glavine disclaimer. But here’s one anyway: I know many love him and are optimistic. I hope to join you in that happy place soon.

to keep this santana hype in perspective, huddy had a better year last year than santana: santana may have had 100 more K’s, which is nice, but hudson had more IP and wins, the same ERA, and gave up 23 less homers.

however, the boys better start studying santana tapes.

My frustration over this isn’t that it’s THE GREAT SANTANA (though he is great), it’s more that the Mets are moving toward the Mega-Spending Team model while we’re rounding up alums from 95 and throwing in other old guys like Kotsay for good measure.

Basically I’m jealous because they’ve got more money to burn.

furthermore, the AL central was weaker than the NL east last season.
and the mets had better hope santana’s arm doesn’t fall off any time soon…say within the next 6-7 years.
i still have a glimmer of hope that peavy will end up in atlanta some day.
i had greater hope before he signed last month to stay in SD through 2012, with an option for 2013. but who knows… *fingers crossed*

I can totally see us going after him in 2014, when he’s had a couple of elbow surgeries and has been like, DFA’d by the Devil Rays or something.

Speaking of being nostalgic for the old guys, have you gotten your Feb. Chop Talk yet? I can’t believe I forgot how cocky Javy is. Cracks me up.

I have, but I’ve become a pretty lazy Chop Talk reader . . . I usually just flip to the gossip pages in the back and look for funny pictures.

      1. Lauren T. Avatar

It’s worth reading, just to hear him talk about what “tremendous” shape he’s in. :D

On a similar note: I keep hearing that Heap lost weight and is super ripped now, but he looks exactly the same, y/n??

          1. Leah Avatar

I do see what you’re saying about him looking the same, but in a way he does look different in person. But I’ve only seen him in person twice and once wasn’t as close as the second time, so I can’t really judge based on that. But other than some small pictures, I haven’t seen him since FanFest..but I did find some pretty cool pictures of him at a radio show at a restaurant that was right after the charity event that y’all went to.

          2. Leah Avatar

And the infamous wedding pictures, of course.

Maybe I’m just refusing to acknowledge svelte Heap because I cannot accept change. Also I have seen pictures of slim high school Heap, and they were kind of freaky.

Awww, I liked him a little fluffy. I’d rather snuggle up to that physique than, say, a manorexic guy like Andy Ashby.

          5. Leah Avatar

I wonder if he’s changed any since the last time I saw him. I don’t like change either and I hope he still looks like the old Heap. Hopefully he’s not getting in shape for his wife’s approval. I love how in ChopTalk Heap mentions that he was ready to go Spring Training in early January and he’d rather play golf than spend time with his wife when she gets to Florida two weeks after he does.

          6. Jenny Avatar

Who the hell keeps asking them if they’re looking forward to spending time with their wives? I would assume that if you marry someone you don’t mind hanging out with them once in awhile. Why is this a fucking interview question?

          7. Leah Avatar

I assume people don’t know what else to ask Heap about his marriage because they know by now he’s not going to give them anything and everything he and his wife do, like Frenchy does about himself and Catie. Maybe they’re not sure how to approach Heap with that in that they figure he won’t say much about anything? But yeah, I’ve seen that question asked a bit too much lately. Maybe they figure Heap will answer just like Frenchy keeps doing.

Andy Ashby?! I had to google him. Apparently he is some old guy. C’mon – everyone knows Shawn Green is the go-to “he looks seriously ill” skinny guy in baseball.

Though Rich Hill is a close second, and I am in love with him, huge eye bags and all.

    1. Lauren T. Avatar

Shawn Green is thin, yes, but I remember being seriously concerned about AA’s health when he pitched for the Braves. He looked about 6’4″, 135 or so. (I’m sure it wasn’t that drastic, but he was scary to look at!)

  5. Jenny Avatar

He pitched for the Braves? Where the hell have I been?

It just got all dark outside and I can see the Turner Field sign from my office window, glowing in the distance . . .

  6. Lauren T. Avatar

Andy was here in the last half of 2000, according to Baseball Reference. He’s listed at 6’1″, 190, but if he weighed 190 when he pitched here, I’m bumping 250. It’s simply not true. His uniform, every piece, hung off his body, and not the way Brian’s pants do. There was nothing IN them. Arms like sticks, scary-scrawny neck, gaunt face. It was baaaaaad. I’m telling you — manorexic!

As long as Heap still wears huge clown pants, I guess I’m okay with his improved physical health.

I still want to join that Yoga class. Retroactively, of course, since Roger McDowell’s Volunteer Early Throwing Program started today and I’m sure BMac is at Turner Field, not in some tights at an LA Fitness.

        1. Jenny Avatar

The fact that he openly did yoga sincerely worries me, but I’m not exactly sure why.
