Fun With Media On New Guy Day!

I’ve said this before, but there are times when I forget that I’m obsessed with baseball because it’s fun to watch, not just because it’s eaten my brain and I’m therefore willing to be in agony when things go wrong. Last night, New Guy Preview Night, I’ll call it, my husband went to bed early, and I was left sitting there giggling at the TV like an idiot for hours — what a fun game, and how great was Teixeira’s intro? I loved how organic it was, how he showed up mid-game so that we actually got to see him walking around shaking hands, and I loved that the crowd went nuts when they put a shot of him drinking water on the jumbotron. Everyone looked quite happy go lucky, and the homers by the three amigos felt like a good omen.

I’m trying to come up with nickname better than the obvious and rather dreadful “Tex,” presently. Maybe “Buzz?” Cause he’s a Yellowjacket, and he’s kind of got that Buzz Lightyear energy, with everyone fawning over the new guy (which I guess would make Andruw Woody?), and he looks a little Buzz Lightyearish. I can’t decide if that’s too dorky — you guys let me know what you think.

In the meantime, check out this great 790 interview with Heap, if you haven’t heard it already. They tease him about the rather svelte action figures that were given out on Heap Night.

Then, if you’re still up for more Heap, with a little Frenchy on the side (though actually, scratch that, there’s more Frenchy than Heap in this, and you’ll understand why when you see it), plus a large helping of “extremely disturbing marketing synergy,” check out this promo for High School Musical 2 that features our Former House Mates, Hamels, Peavy and many others (strangely NOT David Wright, though I wouldn’t be surprised if this was somehow all his idea). Thanks to Karen for the link.

That was a great interview with Heap. I think the best part was about holding the fact that Heap is a 2 time all-star over Frenchy’s head.

Good stuff. I take he does a regular segment with them? Do you know when these happen?

I guess they interview all of them pretty regularly — I found the Heap one on this page on the station’s site, which has a bunch of recent Braves interviews. I’m not sure what time they do the actual interviews live . . . they probably have a schedule somewhere on that site if you hunt around a little.

It appears he’ll be on there today as well or so it says.

        Brian McCann @ 10
        John Schuerholz @ 10:20
        Mark Teixeira @ 10:40

          Well, was on there.

I’m with you though, I don’t really like the nickname Tex either. I don’t know why, it’s not as catchy as Salty was or to me at least.

That video is kinda scary/cheesy-cute. I really don’t know what to think about it, but it’s good the Braves saw more time in it than the Mets seemed to have or Frenchy rather. Now to listen to the Heap interviews. My day shall be good now and the game will make it even better (hopefully).

Everything MLB does for promotion ends up being scary/cheesy, don’t you think? Sometimes also cute, if we’re lucky, in an unintentional way.

Did you listen to the second Heap interview on that page (the older one)? He sounded half asleep and mostly just said “you know” a lot, it was excellent. ;)

That is true now that I think about it, but they usually don’t include McFrenchy in them either.

Actually I haven’t listened to them yet. I was caught in a book all afternoon that I couldn’t put down until just now. I shall save the interviews until after the game to listen to though. Is it me or does hearing Heap any time make you all excited? It does to me anyway, I have no idea why. I guess I’m weird like that or he can just have that effect on people or maybe just me.

I like the Buzz nickname for Tex (yeah, I’m not even attempting to try spell his name without looking), I just didn’t remember to mention it earlier. It’s a cute nickname though. I have to see him acutally play to decide how much I’m gonna like him. I thought I wouldn’t like Salty at all and I ended up liking him a lot. He’s gonna be missed in all loner-glory in the dugout.

Listening to Heap either makes me laugh or makes me sympathetically nervous, depending on if he’s doing his stuttering speechless thing or not. But of course it’s always exciting to have new Heap audio.

I didn’t think I would like Salty, either . . . he’s one who I’ll definitely follow in recaps, just to see how he’s doing. Amazing how quick he grew on me; I guess it didn’t hurt that he was awesome at actually playing baseball, along with the bonus hilarity.

Here’s today’s interview from Heap: here. They also has interviews from Buzz, Huddy, & JS as well.

“Tex” would be fine if he was actually from Texas. ;) I do like the comparison to Buzz Lightyear, and I think it fits well with his GT background.

Yay! Yours is the first yes vote I’ve gotten for this nickname, and I’m starting to like it. I guess I’ll see if it feels natural when I watch the game tonight.

    This post was so exciting!

And I didn’t know that HSM clip was for HSM! I thought I was crazy when I flipped past the Disney channel and saw Heap. I feel so much better now that I know I’m not that crazy. Still a little crazy though.

LOL, yeah, when you’re seeing Heap on random television commercials and immediately assuming you’re just hallucinating him, you’re just crazy enough to enjoy this site. :D

Random is right, Heap is in on of those Dane Cook “There’s only one October” post season hype commercials. This particular one is on facial hair. And they flash up a shot near the end of Heap, at the All-Star game when they introduce all the players.

Yeah, I thought I noticed that the other day. He’s also on some MLB thing where they show a shot of his picture on a computer.
